Ume
Ume (pronounced ooo-may, it’s japanese) is an amazingly loud in the best way indie rock trio out of Houston that now calls ATX home. The band is composed of front woman and guitar player Lauren Larson, her husband and bassist Eric and drummer Jeff Barrera. Lauren’s vocals are beyond amazing. She has this way of going from sugar sweet to tearing away at your soul, and she does it so well. This band started with a DIY punk style, you can definitely still feel it permeating their sound. Their Sunshower EP owned 2009, a perfectly flowing whirlwind of sweet melody, hard edge, and no cliche rigid cookie cutter song styles to be found. Utterly and wonderfully unpredictable with every new chord. Just really, really good music with perfect flow and true to the heart rock.
Ringo Deathstarr
Ringo Deathstarr is another great three piece from right here in Austin. Fuzzed out, feedback heavy, ridiculously trippy shoegaze done right. Of course yes, if you want to be real simple about it, they sound a lot like My Bloody Valentine with hints of BJM and maybe the Dandys, but don’t just say such things and then stop talking about it! That’s such a square thing to do, you could say that about any shoegaze band right? This band has got a whole lot of originality and innovation going on in their sound. It has an unstoppable energy to it,ranging from super fun to low-lying dark, and it’s killer. Alex on vocals is a dream, her voice has a sweet smoothness to it, echoing beautifully over and through the wall of intense sound created by her bass ,guitarist/vocalist Elliot’s madly reverbing guitar and drummer Daniel’s sharp skills. Their song ‘Imagine Hearts’ has been everywhere I look lately, Nylon, Pitchfork, etc. It will get completely stuck in your head after one listen.
Bands Sundress, Follow That Bird! & Schmillion also all have real cool and unique sounds, and this is seriously the best way to spend 5 bucks on a Friday night!
