The Decemberists may become the latest of musical acts to adapt their talent into a stage musical, according to frontman Colin Meloy. He recently spoke of the possibility of a collaboration with Michael Mayer, who directed Green Day musical American Idiot.
Meloy also revealed his past as a theater geek but cast doubt that he could pull off a stage musical.
“I always end up just writing little pop songs that stand a better chance on a record than onstage.”
“Rox in the Box,” a track from the Decemberists’ upcoming The King is Dead was inspired by Meloy’s interest in writing an early-20th century musical about miners in Butte, Montana. Three years ago, he mentioned that he had been approached several times to do a musical and that he came very close to becoming involved with a Peter Pan stage prequel.
