Jack White’s Third Man Records put a limited edition reissue of The White Stripes’ debut album on their eBay page. It sold for $510 and fans lashed out.
Jack White responded to the negative comments saying the move was intended to outmaneuver “flippers” who only buy the limited edition Third Man releases to make money off of them on eBay.
“We sell a Wanda Jackson split record for 10 bucks, the eBay flipper turns around and sells it for 300,” said White. “If 300 is what it’s worth, then why doesn’t Third Man Records sell it for 300? If we sell them for more, the artist gets more, the flipper gets nothing. We’re not in the business of making flippers a living. We’re in the business of giving fans what they want.”
White then went on to tell fans he didn’t wish to give eBay flippers a chance at gaining a profit because they aren’t real fans, and that he’d given Vault members (referring to Vault subscription holders) opportunities in giveaways and auctions.
