Elizabeth Harper and Scott Rosenthal of Class Actress brought their unique, sedate brand of electro-pop to LA’s Echo on November 5. Opening for fellow Brooklyn band Small Black, Harper seemed comfortable performing in the small venue. After all, she started out singing and playing acoustic guitar in New York coffeehouses. Class Actress is heavily influenced by ’80s pop, specifically Depeche Mode and Madonna. Their sound was sparse – little more than Harper’s vocals and Rosenthal’s work on the keyboards – but Harper injected it with restrained passion. The group released an album in February, entitled Journal of Ardency.
