I mean their last actual record came out in 2008, …Earth to the Dandy Warhols, and really an all day discussion can ensue about why or why not you love it or hate it, but chances are…not to many of the songs grace your playlists. If any. And Ya, The Dandy Warhols are Sound in 2009, but it doesn’t really count.
Thanks to the release of The Capitol Years 1995-2007, the Dandy’s best of under Capitol Records, we don’t have to even mention 2008. Let’s reminisce together about the good times….*enter hazy group dream sequence here*
Do you remember how in that awesome documentary Dig about the love/hate fiery & tumoultous romance between The Dandys and Brian Jonestown Massacre (which is still watched by some people for comic relief….ahem) Courtney Taylor-Taylor remarks ‘I sneeze and hits come out!’ to the unimpressed Capitol Records dude? Well, he was kind of right in his own Courtney kind of way. When you look back at the history presented by The Capitol Years, you can’t deny the talent, force and ridiculously catchy nature of these singles. Such perfectly crafted rock hits, The Dandys were really doing something right. Their songs were just fun. Slipping in next to straight-laced and bore-inducing post-grunge and the start of nu-metal horridness, the Dandys still managed to present something original and worth paying attention to. Truthfully, The Dandys never actually fell off my personal radar. These songs have meshed into my ever changing music tastes over the years and I’ve only come to better appreciate by seeing what came before and after how beautifully and perfectly crafted they really are.
The Capitol Years spans chronologically the hit singles, and some surprising not technically singles at all from …The Dandy Warhols Come Down, The uber famous Thirteen Tales of Urban Bohemia and alternate mixes between the Original Welcome to the Monkey House and The Dandy Warhols are sound. It finishes off the history lesson beautifully with tracks off Odditorium or Warlords of Mars and an extra unreleased bonus track. If your a die hard fan, of course as to be expected, you may not agree with all tracks picked for this compilation, but it does present a good variety to be familiar with.
The Dandys live = a really great time. Courtney is still just his cool self. He has this carefree and yet supercharged energy that belongs there on stage with their songs. They have been focusing heavily on 1997’s The Dandy Warhols Come Down and 2000′s Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia, since they are the stars of the latest compilation. And yes, the crowd sings along full hearted and loudest to ‘Bohemian Like You’ of course. Come out and get lost in beautiful walls of psychedelic crashing sound.
