There Are Rules marks the fifth full-length album for The Get Up Kids, but it’s a milestone for another reason–it’s’ their first self-released album on Quality Hill Records.
Seven years later and after a break-up scare, The Get Up Kids finally got into gear and hit the studios for a fifth go at making new music. Prior to this album, their most recent album entitled Guilt Show was said to be their final, followed by a brief break-up in 2005. Luckily, however, that was a false alarm, and the band made the decision to start songwriting yet again in 2009, where they began working on These Are Rules. Ed Rose, long time producer and Bob Weston, who recorded their debut album, Four Minute Mile, were heavily involved in the recording and producing of These Are Rules, giving the album a familiar feel similar to the band’s earliest material, yet still promising of new and surprising sounds.
And as for the new record label, here are some words from front man Matt Pryor:
“We had a really great relationship with Vagrant but we felt that with the proverbial rebirth of the band we wanted to start our own label. Do everything ourselves like we did in the beginning.” And as to naming the imprint? “Quality Hill is a historic neighborhood in Kansas City. It’s not far from where we first formed the band. It seems like an appropriate name for the label.”
