Adding to the momentum provided by Ariel Pink just a few minutes earlier, Ted Leo and his band The Pharmacists amped up, tuned up and were ready to mock almost ten minutes from their scheduled start time. Wasting no time, they dropped number-after-number of no-nonsense hard rock. Consider it the blue-collar no gimmick style of the modern era–the kind Against Me! Is striving so hard to revel in–it was refreshing to see something so confident and based in song craft. And even when the melody wasn’t the focal point, the rhythm section was an all-out assault. It’s criminal to report that Leo only had about a third of the crowd Best Coast had earlier. After so many years of stellar work, he deserves better.
