Full-Bodied Soul
In his sixth full-length album, prominent soul artist Anthony Hamilton has showed that he is here to stay in the music industry. The Point of It All is an exceptional showcase of beautifully written ballads that highlight Hamilton’s ever-talented voice. Throughout the album, his soulful Southern roots convey a raw sense of emotion and authentic modern blues.
Hamilton has been compared to the likes of soul legends Bill Withers and Luther Vandross, yet creates a new and intriguing sound himself. The album is filled with songs of all dynamics in life. From heart torn lyrics highlighting “She’s Gone” (“She was all I’m livin’ for and now she’s gone”) to cheerful up-lifters like “Cool,” featuring Southern hip-hop artist David Banner. Though soul music is normally not very fancy, the use of hip-hop samples and well-mixed melodies here creates a unique blend of genuine yet highly stylistic R&B. In addition to the music, the lyrics can be quite sexy and alluring, invoking the romanticism of love while implementing the torment of heartbreak. Combined with the well-executed incorporation of rap and a more hip-hop stance, you get an excellent fusion between the genres.
The Point of it All definitely exhibits not only Hamilton’s singing voice, but also his musical expertise. It is not hard to see this as one of the best soul albums in a long while.
