Canadian dance – thrash group Hot Hot Heat released their self produced new album Future breeds under indy label Dangerbird Records in June of this year. Staying true to their pushing all limits style, it genuinely feels like the band turned up their instruments as ear-splittingly high as possible and just set of all the fireworks at once in a matter of speaking.
Synths, guitar, drums, and every bell and whistle in between boom to near hysteria straight away with opening track YVR. There’s also some new stylings working their magic on tracks like Zero Results, a more melodic, slow beat and piano heavy ballad that still has a lot of quirky dance -ability. What really makes this attempt by the band pure gold is the many vocal styles of singer Steve Bays that you get on not just one album, such as on the band’s second release the super ambitious Make Up the Breakdown, but even each individual song. When listening, you start out with one notion of “oh this really sounds like ____” and not even a few seconds into the same song it turns into “oh well, now it sounds like that one album from ____.” This pattern just continues over and over again.
HHH is known to really rock a crowd at their live shows. Their beats are so infectious that even Steve Bays just can’t keep still, dancing over any space he can find. There is also a real rock n’ roll aspect present with fast and heavy drums and some nice fuzzy guitar work to add to the pulsing wall of noise. They please fans from over the years with all their favorites off past albums and keep the stage presence going from first song to encore. Come prepared to dance it all out with these mad-scientists of sound.
