The Greek is one of my favorite music venues in LA. It’s like going to a smaller, more intimate Hollywood Bowl. It’s almost magical inside the theater, surrounded by trees and fairy lights. It was a great setting for a homecoming show for the Silversun Pickups. They have a great energy about them and I’m glad I got to see them again as a headline band and playing more of their songs.
First up were the Henry Clay People. Due to the joys of traffic in LA, I got there mid-set and wasn’t able to get any photos but I did get to watch them. This local Los Angeles band delivered a rocking show that was both energetic and fun. The band isn’t what you’d expect to open for the Pickups or Against Me!, who each have different sounds. The Henry Clay People are a band to watch out for and while I can’t predict their success just yet, I look forward to hearing more of their rock and rolling music.
Next up was punk band Against Me! hailing from Gainsville, Florida. The band plays songs that speak against conformity and get the crowd pumped up for what’s to come. As well as the punk vibe, they remind one of the type of band heard in an Irish pub. All that was missing was a pint of Guinness or else it would have been perfect!
Silversun Pickups took the stage in dark silhouettes against a stage illuminated in hot pink and purple and started with “Growing Old is Getting Old.” The band were very excited and even gleeful to be back in LA to play at the Greek. Lead singer/guitarist Brian Aubert even talked about how it was not so long ago that he was in the audience attending concerts and now it was his turn to take the stage. The band played from their latest album Swoon and got the audience singing along. The Greek was a great place for them to have their homecoming show.
