Popular multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird and sculptor Ian Schneller are teaming up to develop and exhibit entitled “Sonic Arboretum” for the Gugggenheim museum’s summer concert series Dark Sounds. The exhibit will premier in New York on August 5th. More info after the jump.
The exhibit will resemble a forest of sorts: horns, hornlings, a two-headed speaker horn and myriad sculptures resembling the speaker horns from archaic Victrola record players will litter the gallery space. Andrew Bird will be present playing violin, loops of which will be projected upwards throughout the gallery, creating an aurally and visually dense landscape, an experience which is aesthetically pleasant to all the senses.
According to Andrew Bird, the intended effect is “”the din of many voices. When the mind focuses on a single voice, it is forced to track its trajectory. When there are too many to process it submits, but never fully relaxes. Echolocation is always engaged. Dozens of horns, a sonic field of poppies, an experiment of sound and sculpture.”
This exhibit is the second in the three part Dark Sounds series. The series commences on July 15, with performances by Beirut. Andrew Bird and Ian Schneller follow them up starting August 5, and the whole thing will be wrapped up by The Cinematic Orchestra on September 3.
