When you think of Guided By Voices, the seminal middle-aged just-some-dudes-rocking-awesome-songs-in-a-mid-90’s-basement band, you think beer, rock and more beer. What you don’t think is violins – though after hearing Owen Pallett’s cover of one of the band’s flagship songs, you may start.
Arcade Fire string arranger and indie stalwart Owen Pallett was invited by The Onion’s AV Club to tackle Guided By Voices’ 1995 mini-epic “Game Of Pricks” for an ongoing series where modern artists cover a classic song selected by the site’s authors. Pallett knocks the song out of the park, as you can see in the video below (along with a humorous prologue about jocks at GBV shows).
Pallett is also opening for The Dirty Projectors in support of his new album Heartland this fall.
