Roger Waters Inadvertently Defaces Elliott Smith Memorial Mural

Roger Waters will be bringing Pink Floyd‘s The Wall to life later this year, but in the meantime he’s accidentally defaced grassroots memorial for the late indie star Elliott Smith (Kill Rock Stars) in Los Angeles.

As part of a graffiti campaign to promote his upcoming tour, Waters hired streets artists in New York City and Los Angeles to put up wheat pastings of a quote from former president Dwight D. Eisenhower at various spots around their cities.

In the process, the Los Angeles artists accidentally covered up Smith’s memorial mural, which was featured on his 2000 album Figure 8 and, following his death in 2003, became a place where fans could leave their messages and wishes.

While many street artists have also tagged the memorial in the recent past, Waters, who was not aware of Smith’s music before the incident, still issued an apology to Smith’s fans on the LA Weekly blog today.
