The first big surprise performance at the FADER Fort this year (last year Kanye West showed up with Erykah Badu, Common and half of his G.O.O.D. Music label) was Nas and Damian Marley performing tracks from their upcoming Distant Relatives album. Amidst classics such as Nas’ “One Mic” and a hip-hop redux of Bob Marley’s “One Love,” Nas and Jr. Gong spit syllabic flow with verbal finesse. Aside from the mere “wow” factor of them performing together, the most inspiring part is how they captivated the crowd so effortlessly. Many hip-hop shows degenerate to an amped-up mess of dull loops and cacophonous hype men, this was fun, engaging and downright cool.
