Earning Your Namesake
Drawing much publicity with their edgy name, Holy Fuck may be the best music to come from Toronto, Canada since Do Make Say Think. The four member group has played at a wide variety of venues including Lollapalooza, Coachella, and even jazz festivals. Their second album, simply titled LP, has been nominated for Alternative Album of the Year at the 2008 Juno Awards in addition to a nomination for the Polaris Music Awards since its 2007 release. After a brief listen though you can see why this band is causing such a stir.
Starting at a sprinters pace with drums and keys, LPshows its energy in the first track, “Super Inuit”. From there the energy never falters, only letting up momentarily for breakdowns like on the song “Lovely Allen”, which creates a enchanting synth oriented dance beat. One might think the complete lack of lyrical content throughout the album might be detrimental but the incredible drum play and rhythmic keyboards give Holy Fuck’s music a unique style that gratifies.
Utilizing an array of manipulated distortion samples, Holy Fuck created what could easily be the definition of innovation. What is great about the layers of melodies on every track on LP is that there is something here for everyone to enjoy. The only major shortcoming is the sad lack of content – the album is a mere nine songs in length, which is a full track more then their previous album. Regardless, to give LP a comprehensive listen the first thoughts that come to mind are holy fuck!
