Color Outside the Lines
An eclectic indie band, The Morning Benders blend a multitude of sounds on their album Talking Through Tin Cans. The vocals are organized, but the music as a whole suggests a band breaking the rules to create a unique sound and the lyrics feel as though they mean something more than obligatory words on a page.
The Morning Benders take a slow, smooth approach, with wonderful song transitions and creative, catchy lyrics. So fluid are the song transitions that the ending of “I Was Wrong” is the beginning of “Loose Change.” “Patient Patient” is a great play on words with lead singer Chris Chu explaining, “Doctor, Doctor / Don’t you give me the pain I’m after / I know I do it to myself / I’m another book on your shelf / All it takes is a little commitment / I’m a patient patient.”
Another memorable tune, “Waiting for War,” lures listeners in with a dramatic piano solo. And with its acoustic beginning, “Heavy Hearts” might not catch your notice at first but it becomes an onslaught of drums and electric guitars, easily the best song on this album.
The Morning Benders don’t stay within the lines of sheet music, they rip them to shreds and refashion them at will. They have no set agenda, they follow no standards, they play exactly what they like and it works. Talking Through Tin Cans is an amazing album, where The Morning Benders use their great hooks and creativity to maximum effect.
