Electronic musician Deadmau5’s scheduled performance tonight at the Santa Monica Apple Store on the Third Street Promenade was abruptly halted after security and the representatives from the fire marshall closed the doors early, causing the crowd to begin throwing things and banging on the storefront’s glass. With only forty or fifty people at that point already inside the store, security announced that the plug had been pulled and forced the small crowd out the Apple Store’s back exit. Apple store workers on the scene stated that the performance was fully canceled and that either “the security or the fire marshall” made the call.
Several police cars arrived as the unruly crowd stayed directly in front of the store, unaware for almost thirty minutes that Deadmau5 was in fact fully not performing at all. As mxdwn was live on the scene, it can be stated that the excitement from the fans was far beyond expectations, a palpable enthusiasm that seemed ravenous for the free entertainment. Curious, as even if the show had gone on, security at the door could be overheard stating that the doors should be shut once the building reached 200-person capacity, and there was easily a few thousand people gathered on the Santa Monica Promenade for this show. Without further disturbance from the crowd, a batch of police officers slowly dispersed those unwilling to leave, at one point announcing over their intercoms “Please leave by the North or South side of the street. This has been deemed an unlawful assembly.”
Photos from the scene to come.
