An article in Topspin suggests Twitter leads to albums getting sold. After the band Jimmy Eat World used Twitter as a marketing tool, they were able to accumulate over 200,000 followers in just over 30 days which they believe led to more sold albums. Lee “Chauvin” Martin of Silva Artist Management was quoted in Topspin saying, “It’s as if you were in a record store looking at the new Jimmy Eat World release and 1000 people standing next to you told you how good it was.” In the first days of the album release, it appears that 22% of the people looking at the Jimmy Eat World sight were led there from Twitter, and that Twitter led to 20% of overall sales.
