Stooges Guitarist Ron Asheton Dead at 60

Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton was found dead in the morning of January 6 at his home in Ann Arbor, Mich., according to local police.

Police were called to Asheton’s house early this morning by his personal assistant who had not been able to reach him for several days.

Police said he “looked fairly peaceful” and that there was no sign of foul play or drug use. Asheton, who had likely been dead since New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, had high blood pressure but no other major medical problems.

Asheton’s body was taken to the University of Michigan medical center, where an autopsy is to be conducted.

Asheton and his drummer brother Scott formed the Stooges with Iggy Pop in 1967. A precursor to punk music, the band stood out for their reckless stylings, hard charging sound and theatrics.

Asheton’s riffs provided the backbone to many classic Stooges tracks. A video of the classic Stooges number “No Fun” is below:
