Prodigy – HNIC Part 2

Mobbin’ Deep

Still spittin’ bars while sittin’ behind them, Prodigy doesn’t let his prison sentence bring his style of East Coast hip-hop from making its way onto disc. H.N.I.C. Pt. 2 is 14 tracks of gangsta rap from half of Mobb Deep.

The album opens with “”Real Power is People,”” an ode to the streets that boasts Prodigy’s almost laid back to slightly lazy vocals. Sid Roams takes the helm of production on this track laying down the bassline thicker than Thanksgiving gravy.

As uninhibited as most gangsta rap albums should be, by “”ABC”” the album seems to drop in intensity, not only in production, but lyrically as well. It could be that Prodigy barely seems to open his mouth to deliver a verse, or maybe this is the calm before the storm.

Second to last track “”It’s Nothing”” wakes listeners up, opening with a thumping kick drum, haunting string hits, and Mobb Deep guest veteran Big Noyd laying down the intro as exciting as possible, or at least enough to contrast Prodigy’s deeper and consistently somber tone.

Although a great effort to release an album during his sentence, the album inevitably sounds like it’s been washed in G-Unit’s laundry and left to dry. Although Mobb Deep signed their allegiance to G-Unit’s label, the only thing H.N.I.C. Pt. 2 has so far is potential, and listeners can hope that Prodigy has more inspiration once he’s out of the pen.
