After only three days on the shelves, Death Magnetic is No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week. Unlike most albums, Metallica’s latest album was released on Friday, September 12, to accommodate the worldwide release date, posting higher sales in a shorter amount of time than albums debuting on the traditional schedule. With nearly half a million copies sold within three days, Death Magnetic has sold more than 70,000 copies than St. Anger, Metallica’s 2003 release. This is Metallica’s largest opening since 1996’s Load.
Metallica is the only group to have five of its albums start at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The Beatles, U2, and the Dave Matthews Band trail with four albums with the same feat. In addition, this is Metallica’s fifth consecutive album to debut at No. 1.http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003850675
