Can’t Teach an Old Band New Tricks
After being almost forgotten for five years (other than the re-release of Failure), The Posies resurface with their 10th album, Every Kind of Light. This is not quite the reappearing act one would have hoped for. The opening song “It’s Great to be Here Again,” the perfect track to make a comeback with, is the best off of the entire album. Unfortunately, any excitement generated from it is lulled into a comatose sleep by the following two tracks and not much is done to revive it for the duration of the album, save briefly for the beginning of “Second Time Around.” This is the kind of music heard on the Adult Alternative channel on digital cable at 3 am.
The album is mundane with only fleeting moments of anything enjoyable. These flashes of pleasurable music are the rhythm guitar lines which have much more potential than the rest of the compositions. The production is like a cheesy romantic comedy’s soundtrack: the high and mid levels are overly boosted with just a touch too much reverb.
All in all, Every Kind of Light is a lackluster resurface album. Perhaps The Posies’ next album can inspire a little enthusiasm, but at this point in the game, it seems a bit much to ask.
