Kelis’ new album is succulent
Since it came out, Kelis’ Tasty has been getting a large amount of radio airplay, and with good reason. Kelis has breached many genres on her latest effort, and yes, the album is delicious. The number one contender on this album right now is the radio hit “Milkshake” unsurprisingly. The lyrics, while humorous, are very clever, and has a great groove feel, with a deep bass drum that hits without making the listener’s head hurt.
Kelis obviously refuses to be stereotyped, with the Beastie Boy’s styled “Keep It Down.” There are some really grinding guitar parts and staccato snare hits, at the same time the breakdown is a nice, airy contrast to the rest of the track.
Kelis uses drum samples that differ from the norm used in most hip-hop. Kelis uses trip-hop samples, with offbeat snare and bass drum hits that manage to make the sound very original.
While the music is great, Kelis’ vocals are definitely the focus. Her voice is strong, feminine, and smooth. She manages to keep each track different in her vocal styles, not letting herself be boxed in.
It’s a treat to listen to an album that manages to break out of stereotypes. This album doesn’t define any one genre, but many, and is just, tasty.
