Grunge-pop juggernaut Sadie Dupuis, frontwoman of Speedy Ortiz, will be releasing her debut album Slugger under the moniker Sad13.
Releasing on 11/11 through Carpark Records, the album promises to be a triumphant celebration of self-possession. Sad13 wrote, produced, and recorded the entire project all by herself. According to her press release, Sadie said “I wrote and played and recorded almost all of it in the two weeks I was subletting a friend’s tiny bedroom.” You can listen to the first single off the album, “Get A Yes”, below:
The first word that comes to mind when hearing the track is colorful. The bright, cutesy synths give the track a playful vibe, while the 8-bit, Nintendo-like drum beats exude retro spunk. Most notably, the track presents a very soft-spoken message of consensual sex. In an era of pop singles like “Blurred Lines”, Sad13 provides lyrics that make sex comforting and inviting; a romantic, gentle gesture that’s a celebration of love between people. This, and the album’s central theme of self-determinism, shine through with lyrics like “I say yes to the dress when I put it on / I say yes if I want you to take it off / I say yes for your touch when I need your touch / I say yes if I want to.”
Speedy Ortiz has recently been busy with their remix album Foiled Again, which samples and remixes the band’s previous release Foiled Deer. The most notable remix off the project, Open Mike Eagle’s remix of “Puffer”, was met with much praise from critics and fans. It’s lyrics have been singled out as the best part, as they challenge attitudes of complacency for when one’s life seems perfect. The band seems to be saying that you’re only really living when you’re working and struggling.
