Just incase you missed it, the Screaming Females premiered their newest art-animated visual to the smash hit, “Empty Head” earlier this week via Spin. In June we covered The Jersey Punks unique interpretation of Taylor Swift’s popular song even amongst other recording artists, called “Shake It Off”. The punk rock blazers new video to the album track, “Empty Head” has a super cool and weird concept of life-size puppet characters story-telling was created by the band in collaboration with director Tobias Stretch. Spin mentioned the playful monsters were illustrated by non-other than the multi-talented front woman of Screaming Females, Marissa Paternoster. In the video, the silly monstrosities come alive to take on a city’s urban area dawn til’ dusk as the band furrows the melody giving the video some good-ole rock texture. As the suspense of the powerful overdrive builds, the characters playfully peruse as cars and other objects disappear then re-appear. It’s a time collapse between the city’s real time and the witty little puppet characters; very trippy. It’s kind of mind-blowing to see the wiggling crabs and spider-like monstrosity climb on the fence, tumble over one another; the interaction is ingenuous. The setting mostly takes place under a shabby bridge near a vacant lot, inner-city style homes and graffiti walls.
Drummer Jarrett Dougherty shares,
“Tobias Stretch is an amazing video artist and we were very excited to work with him. He has developed a unique style of life-sized stop motion animation that uses the real world around us as the location. To fuse our esthetic with Tobias’ style, Marissa and Tobias worked together to create two dimensional characters. We all worked to turn these characters into life-sized puppets and Tobias directed, shot and edited the video over many months. We are very pleased with the final look!”
The DIY punk-trio have been busy! They performed the Brooklyn Vegan Day 3 at SXSW 2015, dropped a visual for their “Hopeless” track featured on their newest album and completed their Spring 2015 North America and Europe tour in May. The Screaming Females are now setting foot on a National Summer Tour with the popp band out of Ohio, Vacation, which jump starts on July 27 in Cleveland. The Don Giovanni signees will also trek to Houston, Honolulu, Durham, Philly and other major cities to blaze the stage of top performance venues across the nation.
If you are just getting in tuned with the Screaming Females and all over their rock glory, the group consists of Marissa Paternoster (singer/guitarist), Michael Abbate (bassists) and Jarrett Dougherty (drummer). The trio self-produced all over their previous releases with engineer Steve Albini who has worked with them on the 2014 concert album, Live at the Hideout even dating back to their 2012 LP Ugly. Going against the self-standing grain, they decided to amp the creativity by bringing in Matt Bayles who has worked with some popular heavy metal rockers like Mastodon and The Sword.
Their critically acclaimed sixth studio LP Rose Mountain was released earlier this week and you can find it on itunes.
