It appears Lauryn Hill may have a found a new way to approach and appreciate the live performance. February and March have her playing acoustic shows at various clubs around NYC, and she recently announced another at The Cutting Room on March 14th that has not sold out (yet). With tickets for her shows at Rough Trade tonight, as well as other tickets for shows at the Highline Ballroom later this month already sold out, we recommend that fans of the former fugee act quickly.
Lauryn Hill has stood out as an innovator in Hip-Hop; with a chart-topping career spanning nearly 3 decades, she has been an innovator in every sense of the word. First, as a fugee, she set a new bar for hip-hop and R&B groups, and as a solo artist she set new boundaries for what hip-hop can be. The fact that she has accomplished so much as a woman in a genre dominated by men (and often misogyny) speaks not only to the extraordinary level of her artistry, but to her unflappable resolve to make powerful, important music.
The concert is part of an acoustic series called the Small Axe, which could be Ms. Hill’s way of combating her reputation for poor and inconsistent live performances in arenas and bigger venues. She has been criticized throughout her career for arriving late to many concerts, and for being confrontational and disengaged from her audiences. With the first show happening tonight, we will soon know if this new approach is a success.
