The U2 singer states that injuries he sustained during a bicycling injury may prevent him from ever playing guitar moving forward. He has also cancelled all of the band’s public appearances in order to focus on recuperating and preparing for the band’s upcoming tour.

As Consequence of Sound reported, the injuries that Bono sustained while bicycling through Central Park were abnormally severe. Bono sustained these injuries while avoiding a collision with another cyclist on November 16. In addition to a facial fracture, Bono has suffered three fractures of his shoulder blade and one of his left humerus, which included six separate brakes that tore through his skin.

Recently, Bono authored a statement saying that it seems like he may never play guitar again. His statement, however, seems to be frank about the injuries and optimistic about his recovery moving forward:

“The consequences of this freak accident are significant enough that I will have to concentrate hard to be ready for the U2 tour in fitness terms. As a result I have cancelled every public appearance and decided this missive is all the communication I can manage for the first half of 2015, beyond muttering and singing to myself of course.”

Bono is of course referencing the recently announced iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE tour in support of U2’s Songs of Innocence. The tour is set to last through most of the second half of 2015, covering major cities in Europe and the U.S.

In terms of his no longer being able to play guitar, Bono adopted a very self-depracating tone, saying, “My bandmates likely won’t be too bothered by this development… The band have reminded me that neither they nor Western civilization are depending on this.”

Due to the injuries, U2 has already had to cancel a week-long residency on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. In response, Fallon and house band the Roots covered the U2 classic “Desire” as a get well message to the injured frontman.
