Twenty One Pilots is an American musical duo from Columbus, Ohio, that formed in 2009. The duo consists of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. Together they have produced two self-released albums, Twenty One Pilots (2009) and Regional at Best (2011). In 2012, the two signed to Fueled by Ramen and released their studio debut, Vessel, in 2013.
Twenty One Pilots’ music style consists of piano, the synthesizer, drums and vocals. Their songs are usually poetry based, which is heavily attributed to band member Tyler. Joseph stated on their website that when he attempted to sing the lyrics, “I … just started saying the words instead of singing them and quickly realized I was rapping.” With their sound bridging between so may genres, it’s hard to put a pin on their sound. Some fans started calling it “schizophrenic pop.”
Twenty One Pilots’ unique sound is demonstrated in their singles “Holding On To You,” “House of Gold,” “Car Radio,” “Guns For Hands,” “Semi-Automatic” and “Migraine.” Twenty One Pilots was nominated for MTV awards “Artist to Watch” and “Best Push Act” in 2013. Their 2014 tour is titled #quiteisviolent tour, and will be making its way across the world stopping in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. A video was released on YouTube through Fueled by Ramen’s channel promoting the tour. The video can be seen here. Austin will be one of the last three tour dates, so catch them while they’re in town!
