What has happened to “indie†music? I don’t necessarily mean indie rock, but any style that is basically unknown to the mainstream. It used to be about the music, about having fun, about unity in something we all care about. These days, it’s a fucking fashion show. People are trying to hard to look the part, or the style, either to impress or fit in. When there is a sub-genre called “fashion-coreâ€, there is definitely a problem. To quote Ian Mackaye, “The Core is getting soft.†I don’t care if people give a damn about how they look. I don’t try to look like a total slob, (mostly because of work but still), but spending insane amounts of time on your hair, or spending 200+ dollars for that pair of jeans, or what have you makes no sense to me.
People that aren’t into the indie music scene may think I’m talking about girls. No, I’m talking about men, who seem to worry about how they look than if the band they are going to see is any good. It’s the people at shows who look around at the crowd more to see who is there than the band who is on-stage. It’s the people who stand there with there arms folded, unmoving, with a look of boredom in their face (However, their hair is perfectly sloppy, and their pants are distressed just right). If you are so damn bored, then why come? So that you can post about it on the Internet later? (Irony I know.)
Maybe I’m just old fashioned, hell, maybe I’m just old. I remember going to shows and dancing my fool head off, risking life and limb for it, with kids in a pit much bigger than me. While I don’t tend to dance anymore, I will still get into the music and ‘two-step’ here and there. Its music, it’s supposed to be fun. Don’t be in it for the trend, or because your best friend is into it, do it for yourself, because it does something inside you that makes you lose your shit. Go to shows because you want to sing along, because you don’t mind the possibility of getting hit, because you want to talk to people. Don’t be an elitist, the scene has too many as it is.
