The newest episode of Saturday Night Live was consistent with the show’s recent interest in parodying musicians. We reported that M.I.A., Madonna, Bjork, Michael Cera, and Zooey Deschanel were the butt of SNL’s jokes last week. This time around, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon were the subjects of SNL’s playful ridicule. Though the entire sketch is good, Justin Timberlake definitely takes the cake with his dead-on impersonation of Justin Vernon.
Perhaps the most memorable line of the sketch is when Timberlake proclaims, “Sorry I’m late, whatever, umm, I was just wandering barefoot in the woods of Wisconsin, fashioned this guitar out of a canoe and I wrote a song for your baby.” Those familiar with Vernon’s story and mannerisms will be thrilled by Timberlake’s attention to detail.
Since it’s pretty hard to diss a guy like Justin Vernon without feeling a tinge of remorse, Timberlake was seen holding an ‘I heart Bon Iver’ sign at the closing credits. As reported by the Rolling Stone, it became clear there were no feelings of animosity once Vernon tweeted “holy shit, i was just watching SNL and JT did a Bon Iver hilarious thing! Also, Maya Rudolph saying ‘bon iver’ is enough. I can die now!!!”
