Take psychedelic-rock, add soul, and make it heavy as can be, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for what makes Monophonics such a remarkable band. Monophonics has a signature arrangement of instruments for a variety of sound such as a mellotron, harp, moog, and lap steel guitar, and many brass instruments to provide their trademark smooth, but powerful sound. The nature of the genre they play in recalls a nostalgic feeling, like the songs your parents grew up with, and in turn showed you. However, Monophonics keeps their sound absolutely fresh, and puts adaptive new takes on the heavy soul genre, that begs the question about what the next step for contemporary music is.
Monophonics started their musical venture in 2012, with their album, In Your Brain, which cemented their place in the psych-soul genre. Their next album, Sound of Sinning, which featured their song La La La Love Me, which is filled with that classic feeling. Their newest album, It’s Only Us, came out this year, with lyrical topics of the current state of our world, mental healths, and power struggles, with an undertone of hope and resilience.
Monophonics have built a reputation for being a band you must see live. Be sure to hear their expansive sound in person, and listen to their newest album.
