Electronic group Chromatics will be surprise releasing their latest album Closer to Grey tonight, which will be their first releases in over seven years. This follow-up to their 2012 album Kill for Love, will be released on streaming services starting at midnight tonight Eastern Time, on Apple Music and Spotify and will be available for purchase on iTunes.
The band was originally set to release an album entitled Dear Tommy, which has been teased since at least 2015, however the band’s main multi-instrumentalist and producer Johnny Jewel allegedly destroyed all physical copies of that album after a near-death experience in 2015. This claim was made by the band’s former manager Alexis Riviera who tweeted “Christmas day 2015, Johnny almost died in Haiwaii. When he came back home to California he destroyed all copies of Tommy. 15k CDs and 10k vinyl in the Italians warehouse in Glendale, all gone.”
Despite the destruction of these recordings, the band is advertising Closer To Grey as their seventh studio album rather than their sixth, as Kill for Love serves as their fifth studio album release. This means that the band may plan on releasing Dear Tommy in the future, although this possible release is more speculative than concrete.
During the past few years the band has released a slew of singles including “Blue Girl,””Black Walls,” “Shadow,” and “Time Rider,” however none of these tracks are listed on the upcoming album’s tracklist. A few of these tracks were featured on the band’s Camera EP released last year.
