Famous Hollywood director Spike Jonze just recently shot the music video for Karen O & Danger Mouse’s newest single “Woman”. The video was shot live on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “Woman” will appear on the band’s newest album Lux Prima.
Spike Jonze, has shot many famous films including Where the Wild Things Are and Her among others. With his unique directing style and with Karen O’s one of a kind sound, the video for “Woman” makes for a quite avant garde piece.
The black and white video starts out oozing with female energy. Fittingly, it begins with multiple barefooted women who are dancing, clapping, and chanting. They’re all united as they wear matching outfits of black sweatpants and white tank tops whilst stamping their feet together. The dancing women circle up and then retreat to where the band members quietly stand. As the women sing “ah, ah” they rock the guitarist and bassist back and forth. The women’s strong and confident energy juxtaposed with the still and straight faced positionality of the musicians makes for an interesting dynamic. Later in the video, the women finally congregate around a caped figure that is none other than Karen O. It’s quite possibly one of the coolest music video introductions to take place.
Though the video begins with a pretty minimalist set, this quickly changes as the viewer is transported to a smokey and rundown outdoor area on the stage complete with trees, and an ancient car. From there, Karen O walks around the set, always accompanied with her badass backup dancers. The shots in this video are outrageous as the camera moves between the footwork choreography of the dancers, musicians, and Karen O herself.
