Last Friday New York City darkwave band Weeknight released their new album Dead Beat Creep, which was their first since 2014’s debut Post Everything. Late last year they debuted a single from that album, “Done With Me,” and today we are excited to premiere the lo-fi, vintage VHS-style video for that song.
The track is a moody bit of synth-driven post-punk, though the action is led off by reverb-heavy guitars, giving the impression that the band’s sound was extracted from deep within an Arctic cave. While minor chords abound, giving the track a dramatic, noire-y feel, the drum maintains a shuffling dance beat, giving the track enough of a backbeat to move the goth kids to the dance floor. The band limited themselves to analog instrumentation on this record, ensuring these were songs that would translate well to the live stage. The result of this limitation is a haunting and complex yet organic sound on “Done With Me.”
Weeknight is mainly the product of duo Andy Simmon and Holly MacGibbon, who also own the bar Birdy’s on Central Ave. in Brooklyn. On this new record, they’re joined by Russell Hymowitz on bass and Jasper Berg on drums. The video was recorded by none other than The Men’s Mark Perro, who edited the camcorder footage he took on a VHS mixer, with pretty captivating results. “Our friend Mark Perro(The Men) shot this on a VHS camcorder and it was edited on an old school VHS mixer. We love that it sort of looks like it was filmed for a German Variety Show like 40 years ago.”
