Experimental Inuit throat singer is a relatively specific niche to fill, but Tanya Tagaq has been filling it spectacularly since her 2005 debut Sinaa. Tagaq’s last album, 2016’s Retribution, had earned her a longlisted nomination for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize, an award she had previously won with 2014’s phenomenal Animism.
This year, she has joined hands with Adult Swim for an entry in the 2017 Adult Swim Singles series. “Frostbite” offers cinematic bliss, with the overwhelming sounds of nature permeating through every second of the track.
The Adult Swim Singles series this year will be running throughout the entire year, instead of just for a few months as prior incarnations had. Already, we’ve seen “Sooo Bad,” coming from Sad13, the solo project of Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis, and we have a vast variety of artists to look forward to as well.
Participants include such fantastic artists as Abra, Brian Eno, Sevdaliza, D∆WN, Run the Jewels, Julian Casablancas, Thundercat and Explosions in the Sky, as well as an even longer list of artists, which were just announced at the end of last month.
This is not her first partnership with Adult Swim – last year, she appeared on the excellent NOISE compilation they released, which had also featured contributions from Arca, Pharmakon, clipping., Melt-Banana, Merzbow and more.
