Rasputina is coming to Subterranean August 10th. Rasputina is a cello-driven band with an obsession with the Victorian Era and they make sure their music and outfits reflect it. Melora Creager is the mastermind behind the band’s artistry: she writes the music and lyrics, fronts the band as head cellist and vocalist AND she creates the art for the band’s albums, website and other promotions.
The group formed back in 1989 when Creager placed an ad in The Village Voice seeking female bandmates to form an electric cello choir. The first respondent was The Voice’s then editor, Julia Kent. At one point, the group had nine members but they’re known as a three person band. After signing with Columbia Records and the release of their first album, they signed Chris Vrenna – of Nine Inch Nails. The eclectic rock group has toured with Marilyn Manson, Siouxie Sioux and Bob Mould. The band has released a steady flow of albums over the years – their latest Unknown (2015) was released solely on CD and will probably not ever be available for digital download. This deliberate move was decided upon after Creager suffered a hack on her computer and websites.
