Northern California’s notorious stoner rock band Sleep, announced their 2017 spring tour, kicking off on January 27th in Los Angeles, California. With a total of nine scheduled stops, Sleep will be making their way across various cities in the U.S eventually closing the tour out overseas in London, UK on April 30th.
Sleep has been anything but your average, ordinary rock band. Originally formed as a hardcore punk rock band by the name of Asbestosdeath, the band completely changed their musical direction and name to Sleep with the release of their album “Volume one.” Soon after, former guitarist Justin Marler parted ways and the remaining members (Al Cisneros, Matt pike and Chris Hakius) took matters into their own hands. The three of them recorded and sent a demo to U.K.’s indie record label Earache Records. Released in 1992 exactly as it was received by the label, “Sleeps Holy Mountain” became the bands second studio album. Following the release, London Records signed Sleep, however their time under the label didn’t last very long. Delivering their album originally titled Dopesmoker now titled Jerusalem consisted of a 60-minute ode to marijuana. Unfortunately, after editing the song down to 52 minutes the label still rejected it and eventually dropped the band. In 1998, Sleep broke up and it wasn’t until 2003 that Dopesmoker finally was released.
Nevertheless in 2009 the band reformed , and now after a recent post on the bands Facebook page the band may be hinting the potential release of new material? Lets hope so! (see post below)
