In the Whale’s signature sound– which incorporates elements of punk, hard rock, and blues –has resonated with fans across the country. The Colorado rock band is made up of duo Nathaniel Valdez and Eric Riley, who initially met in the small town of Greeley. Both were active in Greeley’s modest music scene, and after multiple run ins with each other, Valdez eventually approached Riley about a solo project he had been working on. Impressed with Valdez’s work, Riley soon joined to complete the duo.
Riley’s aggressive drumming, along with Valdez’s deep, blues inspired vocals have proven to complement each other very well, and have given the band a sound that differentiates them from contemporaries. In 2012, the group self-released their first commercial EP Cake, which helped attract fans from all over Colorado, and led to tours across the state. The following EP– Nate & Eric –would have greater success, gaining attention and airplay from several college radio stations across the country. The sophomoric EP would also lead to performances at the 2014 Riot Fest, and Treefort Music Festival. Since then, the duo has released two more EP’s, along with several singles and covers.
