Live Review: Son Lux at Pacific Electric

Musical trio Son Lux, performed at Pacific Electric on Oct. 8 with openers mmeadows. This is Son Lux’s fourth concert, the last one in the US, before they embark on the international part of their world tour that will run through March of next year. Since the band’s start in 2008, they are now most known for their recent soundtrack compositions for the movies Everything Everywhere All at Once, Thunderbolts*, and their newest composition for the film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. This concert is displaying their newest album Out Into, their 10th original album that came out earlier this year. The atmosphere of the venue was intimate, which allowed fans to interact with the artists throughout the night. It was with a haze of smoke around fans of multiple generations, who had buzzed with anticipation for the music to start. The openers, mmeadows, husband and wife musical duo, with their stripped-down 9-song set, primed the audience with some of their newer songs that feature electric wind instruments, even performing a song that has yet to be released. The duo’s energy that they brought to the stage was electric and had perfectly primed the audience for their headliners.

When Son Lux entered, the crowd cheered and an audience member called out to the drummer (Ian), wishing him a happy birthday, while the main vocalist (Ryan) later in their set had the whole crowd sing “Happy Birthday,” displaying that closeness of the musical group with their fans immediately upon entering the stage. Their set consisted of their three main instruments, guitar, piano and drums; with each member having an additional electronic component to their instruments. They played a total of nine songs, with two additional songs as their encore. Starting their set with a song titled “Endlessly,” from their new album, the audience started to dance and sing along with the group. Many of the songs in their set had the crowd bopping or dancing along with their electric-rock music. With each song, the lighting on stage had seemingly matched their colorful, unique and abstract sound. Amidst their set, they had guest vocalists come out to perform with them, the first being Ogi, a Nigerian singer-songwriter, who performed a duet of the song “Even if it Hurts,” from the Thunderbolts* album. Additionally, both members of the opening duo came out individually to perform a few of the band’s songs, “Want You To Love,” which also featured a vocalist named Nia and “Lost It to Trying.” For the encore, the lead vocalist was brought to tears acknowledging the band’s partners and speaking about how thankful they all were for their family’s support touring. The room was brought to tears when his son came on stage and gave the vocalist the biggest hug right before performing their last two songs, “Now I’m Listening” and “Unbind.” After the performance, the merchandise stand, which consisted mostly of physical media (vinyl records and CDs) and T-shirts, was flooded with a huge line to the door of fans.
