Sweden’s Cult of Luna have released their new single “The Rift,” their epic eight-minute single previewing their anticipated new LP, In The Shadow Of Your Shadow, which will be released on November 6 via RED CRK Recordings. The band’s tenth album finds Cult of Luna broadening their horizons, with “The Rift” pushing the band to both their quietest and fastest terrain to date, where passages of loose strums and subtle keyboards are interrupted by shockingly quick metal breakdowns, calling back to their hardcore roots.
The band also released an official visualizer for the track, which includes futuristic images of a spiral web, delicate wings, a diamond-like stone severed down the center, and a skull cut in half. When discussing the track, the band’s Johannes Persson explains, “‘The Rift’ is about the loneliness of the human experience and the urgent need to belong, to seek refuge in the collective. There’s a kind of euphoria in knowing your peers’ mantras, in feeling chosen for a greater cause. Those shared beliefs tell you who you belong to. More importantly, they tell you who is excluded.”
“In an echo chamber, every idea comes back louder. Certainty hardens, loyalty to the pack deepens, and the rift grows wider,” he added. “These are interesting times we live in, for sure. Truth has become a matter of conviction, and the wheel of history turns for another round. The noose is tightening and we have no one to blame. We tied it ourselves.” “The Rift” follows the band’s release of the single “A Way Back” and the album’s title track and lead single “In the Shadow of Your Shadow,” which earned support from Metal Injection, Brooklyn Vegan, Kerrang!, New Noise Magazine, The PRP, Lambgoat, and The Line of Best Fit.
