Grace Potter Shares Inspiring New Single “Spacewalking Woman” Co-Written With Jessica Meir

Grace Potter released her new single “Spacewalking Woman” on Friday, Oct. 2. The single is a collaboration between Earth and outer space, with Potter writing the song from Earth and receiving ideas and terminology from NASA astronaut Jessica Meir, who was staying aboard the International Space Station.

The two women have shared a fascination with connecting exploration, science and creativity. They first met at Johnson Space Center when Potter’s band was filming a music video for the song “Look What We’ve Become.” They soon became friends, and Potter got to see Meir’s first launch in 2019 with Meir’s family.

The inspiration for “Spacewalking Woman” became Meir’s NASA SpaceX Crew-12 mission as commander to the International Space Station. After Meir went on a spacewalk, Potter was intrigued and asked Meir to share terminology and acronyms used on the space station to write the song in the language of space exploration.

Potter stated that the track was first made to cheer on her friend who was in space, but then Potter said, “I started thinking, maybe this is too much of a vibe to keep to ourselves. When her mission was extended, it gave us even more time to keep creating and experimenting: me down here on Earth and Jess floating up there in space.”
