DIIV Shares Dynamic New Single & Video “Trillions”

The new track is the most overtly pop-focused song DIIV have released yet, offering another glimpse into the band’s upcoming album ZIRP!. DIIV are leaning further into their pop instincts with “Trillions,” the latest single and music video from the band’s upcoming fifth studio album, ZIRP!. Set for release October 30 via Fantasy Recordings, ZIRP! finds DIIV pushing beyond the hazy shoegaze and grunge influences that have helped define their sound while embracing something brighter, stranger and considerably more immediate. “Trillions” might be the clearest example of that shift yet.

Directed by Jaxon Whittington, the “Trillions” video plays like an exaggerated fantasy of wealth, success and excess. There are big houses, stacks of cash, fast cars and DIIV dressed in sharply tailored business suits. Everything looks polished and expensive, but there’s something intentionally strange underneath the surface. Is the world being presented as a genuine fantasy, a delusion, or satire of modern ambition? DIIV doesn’t exactly provide an answer, which makes the video’s presentation feel even more unsettling.

It’s a fitting introduction to the ideas behind ZIRP!. The album takes its title from “zero interest rate policies,” referring to the economic policies that helped define the financial landscape of the past decade and, according to the band, contributed to a culture of failed startups, financial speculation and an increasingly digitised existence. The new song also continues the band’s collaboration with A. G. Cook, who produced ZIRP! and has worked with artists including Charli XCX and Caroline Polachek. Cook initially approached the record with the idea of radically reconstructing DIIV’s demos, but the process ultimately took a different direction. After attending the band’s shows and became immersed in their live sound.

With “Trillions,” DIIV are also heading back on the road this month, supporting Interpol on select North American dates before playing a show with Basement at Los Angeles’ Shrine Expo Hall on October 20. The song arrives as DIIV prepare to release ZIRP! on October 30.
