The long-awaited release of Beck’s new album, Ride Lonesome, has finally arrived today, September 18, through Capitol Records. The album, produced by Beck and mixed by Nigel Godrich, has already received high praise. In conjunction with the album’s release, a striking new video for the album’s second track, “Run Away,” has premiered. In “Run Away,” the sublime piano and guitar melodies of Ride Lonesome provide a backdrop to interwoven narratives of parallel lives against the compelling Tokyo cityscape. Directed by Mikai Karl and produced by Ryan Smale, the video stars Golden Globe-winning actor Tadanobu Asano (known for roles in Shogun, Thor: Ragnarok, and Ichi the Killer).
Ride Lonesome achieves a combination of fresh yet familiar sounds, thanks to the collaboration of musicians who worked with Beck on Sea Change, Morning Phase, and Mutations. Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner reunited at Room B in United Studios, Hollywood. Godrich, who previously collaborated on Sea Change and Mutations, returned to mix the album. Beck reflected on the growth and deepened chemistry among the band members over the decade since the release of the GRAMMY-winning Morning Phase in 2015, stating, “While we were revisiting a musical and physical place, it also felt like we were finding new sounds and emotional textures along the way.”
The release of Ride Lonesome comes just days before the kickoff of its namesake tour on September 22 at the Santa Barbara Bowl. This tour will see Beck delve into the music of Ride Lonesome alongside highlights from Sea Change, Morning Phase, and Mutations. He will bring these songs to life in intimate and ornate theaters across the continent. The tour itinerary includes stops at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, Red Rocks, two nights each at The Masonic in San Francisco, Massey Hall in Toronto, and the Brooklyn Paramount, concluding on November 10 at Keller Auditorium in Portland, OR.
