Beirut at Brooklyn Steel on April 2nd and 3rd

Beirut returns to Brooklyn on April 2nd and 3rd next year. The two nights at Brooklyn Steel will kick off the band’s spring tour.

Beirut, led by Zach Condon, blends influences from folk, Balkan, electronic, and world music. Although Condon formed the band alone and occasionally releases solo projects, he works with a rotating lineup of musicians, especially at live shows.

“A Study of Losses” is the latest release from Beirut. Although not sounding like a typical soundtrack, the record was commissioned by Swedish circus Kompani Giraff to accompany an acrobatic stage show by the same name. The album and show are inspired by German author Judith Schalansky’s book, “An Inventory of Losses”. The book contains a collection of twelve fictional essays, with each essay depicting a story about an object or being that the world has lost, such as extinct animal species. In the single “Guericke’s Unicorn”, inspired by a fossilized reconstruction of a unicorn horn using bones from wooly mammoths and a narwhal, Condon evokes the book’s central theme, singing, “Where did you go? Where have you been? Tell me how this thing could make any sense.”
