Kate Nash has released her new single “Spilt Milk” in anticipation of her sixth studio album Cailín, which will be released next year on January 22 via Kill Rock Stars. The track follows the release of her single “Famine” earlier this year, a cover performed by Nash of Sinéad O’Connor’s song, which will also appear on her upcoming album. With the album being described as a “Cranberries-meets-Bikini Kill riot grrrl love letter to her Irish heritage that takes on colonialism, inequality, women’s rights, family & forgiveness,” “Spilt Milk” seamlessly ties into these themes, with the track initially being written about abortion law in Ireland prior to the repeal of the country’s Eighth Amendment in 2018 while also coinciding with the effects of the overturning of Roe v Wade in America. The music video shows Nash darting around a wide open field with her fully black eyes on display as she expresses her frustration towards the people in power that refuse to listen to her and continue to exert their power over her, singing, “Well how come they’re in charge? How come they get to say no?”
When discussing the inspiration for her upcoming album, Nash described that her decision to make it came from her realization that the tin whistle was her first instrument, and that traditional Irish music was her first experience of live music. She recognized that she had never explored her heritage through her artistry before despite the fact that there was “a rich tapestry within it, the music, mythology, politics and [her] roots.” When describing the album-making process, she stated, “Making has helped me understand more about who I am and where I come from, but it feels like only the beginning.”
Nash has starred as Britannica in HBO’s GLOW, wrote and performed in the musical Only Gold, and was recently in attendance at the Sense and Sensibility world premiere.
