Weyes Blood Live Debuts Two New Songs “Modern Dreams” & “Good Lovers” At BBC Proms Show In London

Weyes Blood appears to be entering a new chapter. The singer-songwriter, whose real name is Natalie Mering, took the stage at London’s Royal Albert Hall this week for a special BBC Proms performance with Jules Buckley and his Orchestra, where she unveiled two previously unheard songs: “Modern Dreams” and “Good Lovers.”

The September 8 performance marked a rare return to the spotlight for new Weyes Blood material. Mering’s most recent album, And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow, arrived in 2022, and fans have been waiting for signs of what might come next. According to Stereogum, both songs were presented as elaborately arranged torch songs, with Mering’s voice sitting at the center of the orchestral production. The setlist placed “Modern Dreams” and “Good Lovers” back-to-back, following “Everyday” and leading into “Hearts Aglow.” Mering closed the night with “Movies” as an encore. The appearance has naturally sparked speculation that Mering could be preparing the next Weyes Blood album.

Those signs finally arrived in London. Both “Modern Dreams” and “Good Lovers” appeared toward the end of Mering’s BBC Proms set. The performances featured elaborate orchestral arrangements, giving the unreleased songs a sweeping, old-Hollywood quality that fits naturally alongside Weyes Blood’s grand, emotionally rich songwriting. Her previous two records, 2019’s Titanic Rising and 2022’s And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow, form the first two installments of what has been described as a trilogy. Stereogum notes that fans are already wondering whether these new songs could signal the long-awaited final chapter. Nothing has been officially confirmed yet, but debuting two new compositions at such a prominent performance certainly suggests that Mering has been working on new material.

For now, “Modern Dreams” and “Good Lovers” remain unreleased outside of the live performance. There is no official announcement of a new Weyes Blood album or release date attached to either song. Still, after nearly four years since And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow, hearing Mering premiere two new songs in one night is a pretty significant development.
