Danish rockers Iceage bring the For Love of Grace & the Hereafter US/CA Tour in support of their new album to Bowery Ballroom on April 12th.
Formed in Copenhagen in 2008, Iceage now consists of vocalist and guitarist Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, guitarists Johan Suurballe Wieth and Casper Morilla, bassist Jakob Tvilling Pless, and drummer Dan Kjær Nielsen. Signing with Escho locally and What’s Your Rupture? Records internationally, they erupted onto the scene in 2011 with the 25 minute, 12 song New Brigade, which burned with an abrasive, full-throttle punk energy filled with splashy hi hats, sparkly guitars, and undercurrents of noise rock, shoegaze, and no wave. Led by Rønnenfelt’s commandingly brooding bark (mostly sung in English), the album was praised for its visceral vortex of sound and raw, emotional energy that feels like a welcome punch in the gut. After joining Matador Records and releasing You’re Nothing in 2013, they followed up with Plowing Into the Field of Love, which marked a shift to a wider sonic palette inspired by the likes of Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave. They took it even further on 2018’s Beyondless and 2021’s Seek Shelter to embrace a bigger, more expansive alternative rock sound and experiment with more instruments including horns, strings, mandolin, and more.
In May of 2026, Iceage released their most recent album, For Love of Grace & the Hereafter, through independent label, Mexican Summer. For this record, the band returned to the rapid-fire songwriting approach of their early albums (New Brigade was recorded in just three days), retreating to Silent Studios in the middle of the woods near the Swedish-Norwegian barrier to fully immerse themselves in the process. The result is a blazingly urgent album that rushes ever forward with a fiery spirit without veering too far into chaos. Oscillating strings beautifully blend with rapid-fire drums and dizzying guitars on “Salve for Every Sore,” “Star” features a waterfall of chords and a groove that dares you not to move, and “Ember” expertly transitions from a xylophone intro to a discordant gallop to a euphoric chorus. Along with its nihilistic, bleak, and gory lyrical themes, the album’s uninhibited spirit perfectly matches the pace of Iceage’s work ethic which Rønnenfelt describes as being “about catching something in the air. It’s like you’re conceiving these songs, and there’s kind of one chance.” Their live shows rock with the same kind of spur-of-the-moment magic with a relentlessly raucous energy that permeates every corner of the room from the band’s magnetic stage presence to the crowd’s chaotic, smile-filled dancing.
