After her Kentucky Queen Tour Southern release shows for her upcoming album, The Hard Truth, country legend Wynonna brings The Hard Truth Tour across the U.S. with a stop in NYC at Bowery Ballroom on October 8th with support from Troubadour Blue.

In the late 1970s, Naomi Judd moved with her daughters, Wynonna and Ashley, to Morrill, Kentucky where Wynonna, inspired by the country music around her, learned how to play guitar and harmonize as a way to connect with her mother. Moving to Nashville in 1979, Naomi and Wynonna soon after landed a live audition at RCA Records (when Wynonna was 18) where they were quickly offered a joint recording contract with RCA and Curb. As newly-minted country duo, the Judds, they released their smash-hit debut EP, Wynonna & Naomi, in 1984, which included the first #1 country hit by a female duo in more than thirty years, “Mama He’s Crazy.” Wynonna and Naomi continued to soar as the biggest-selling country duo in the 1980s, releasing twenty Top Ten country hits (including fourteen #1s) across five studio albums and winning five Grammys, nine Country Music Association awards, and seven Academy of Country Music awards. 

In 1990, Naomi found out she had chronic hepatitis C, which led to the difficult decision that the duo would dissolve after their huge Farewell Tour ended in December of 1991. Praised for Wynonna’s extremely strong vocal performance and Naomi’s beautiful harmonies and engaging stage presence, the Judds changed the direction of country music by proving that they could return to its roots with straightforward, melodic songs influenced by traditional folk music, acoustic blues, and family harmony acts while raking in massive album sales and concert attendance. 

In 1992, Wynonna released her debut album, Wynonna, through MCA Records and Curb which was groovier and more driving than the music of the Judds and topped the country albums chart, sold over five million copies, and included three #1 singles. Proving that she could have an equally successful solo career as the one she had with her mother, Wynonna would go on to release nine albums throughout the ‘90s and 2000s, earning nearly a dozen top 10 hits (including six #1’s), four Grammy nominations, three platinum certifications, over ten million units sold, and an Academy of Country Music Award for Top Female Vocalist. The Judds reunited on multiple occasions throughout Wynonna’s career, including the 1994 Super Bowl Halftime Show, the two-year Last Encore Tour starting in 2010, and even a reality tv series in 2011, before the mother and daughter were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2022 (unfortunately the day after Naomi tragically passed at age 76). 

Known for her husky voice which can just as well growl intense blues as tenderly express heartache, Wynonna’s status as one of the biggest names in country music for the last 40 years has never been in question. Earlier this summer, she announced her upcoming album, The Hard Truth (scheduled for October 2nd), from which she has released the incredibly smooth “Am I Missing Out” and boot-stomping “Kentucky Queen.” Produced by her husband Cactus Moser and written and recorded on their farm, this record promises to be her most vulnerable release yet, and as Wynonna explains, “these songs tell the truth about where I’ve been, what I’ve lost, what I’ve overcome, and who I’ve become. This album asked me to be brave enough to tell the truth—even when my voice shook. It challenged me to let go of perfectionism and embrace the beauty of honest emotion.” Hoping that the album will allow listeners to “feel what I was feeling while writing and recording them” and “feel seen, understood, or a little less alone,” she made each song with the anticipation of what it would feel like to share the deeply personal album with a live audience.
