Loathe brings their A Stranger To You North American Tour, in support of their latest album, to Brooklyn Paramount on September 25th with special guests Fleshwater and Prostitute.
Formed in Liverpool in 2014, Loathe now consists of lead vocalist Kadeem France, guitarist and vocalist Erik Bickerstaffe, drummer Sean Radcliffe and bassist Feisal El-Khazragi. Initially operating under aliases and performing in masks (an ode to inspirations Slipknot), they released their debut EP, Prepare Consume Reload, independently in 2015 before it was reissued the following year by SharpTone Records as the label’s first release. Wanting to be known because of their music rather than hiding behind a buzz-generating gimmick, they soon after abandoned the masks, allowing the unique, genre-defying sound they were crafting to take center stage. Embracing their newfound artistic identity, they released their first full-length album, The Cold Sun, in 2017, which follows a post-apocalyptic storyline.
After being nominated for Best New Band at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards and Best UK Breakthrough Band at the Heavy Music Awards in 2018, Loathe released their breakout album, I Let It in and It Took Everything, in 2020. The album, which was named best metal album of the year by Revolver (as well as album of the year by Kerrang!, Alternative Press, and more), was heavily praised for its bold mix of genres that pushed the boundaries of what heavy music could be. From hard-hitting shoegaze anthem “Two Way Mirror,” to Radiohead-inspired soundbath “451 Days,” to gut-punching, knock-you-off-your-feet wall of noise “Gored,” I Let It in and It Took Everything set Loathe on the path to becoming one of the most cutting-edge metalcore bands of the decade.
This July, Loathe released their latest album, A Stranger To You, which follows in the footsteps of their breakout album’s eclectic experimentation by branching out to even more genres on their most maximalist release to date. Merging shoegaze with industrial on “Block of Flats,” synth-wave with R&B on “Fangs,” spoken word with ambience on “Entrance” and “ثينا,” embracing their softer side on indie ballad “The Ladder,” and somehow achieving all of these on “Gifted Every Strength,” A Stranger To You sees the band continuing to operate at their creative apex and solidifies their position as a leading artist in the metal genre.
