The Drums Team Up With Mareux For New Single “It Didn’t Matter”

The Drums have teamed up with Mareux for their new collaborative single, “It Didn’t Matter.” The track is the first release from Jonny Pierce’s newly launched Abysmal Records, a label created as a space for collaboration, experimentation and supporting emerging artists.

“It Didn’t Matter” is a synth-pop song with a cold and melancholic atmosphere. Mareux’s darkwave-inspired synthesizers give the song a polished but emotional sound, while The Drums’ Jonny Pierce delivers the lyrics with a vulnerable and direct vocal performance. The track moves forward with soft electronic percussion and layered keys, creating a feeling that is both dreamy and sad.

Lyrically, the song follows someone dealing with the aftermath of an unequal relationship. Pierce sings about giving all of his love to someone who pushed him away but never fully let him go. The chorus asks whether any of his effort “didn’t matter,” revealing the speaker’s frustration, hurt and embarrassment after receiving nothing in return. Rather than hiding those feelings, the song focuses on the painful realization that needing love does not make someone foolish.

Pierce explained that working with Mareux came together easily, saying the producer’s synth work reminded him of the synthesizer-based music he listened to as a teenager while struggling to find love. Mareux’s production brings a darker edge to The Drums’ melodic indie-pop sound, making the collaboration feel like a natural meeting between the two artists.

An official visualizer accompanies the release, pairing the track with moody imagery rather than a narrative music video. The visual allows the song’s synth-heavy production and emotional lyrics to remain the main focus.

“It Didn’t Matter” begins a six-month series of collaborative singles from Abysmal Records. The series will lead into the next chapter for The Drums, with a new full-length album expected in 2027.

According to mxdwn, Mareux previously performed at Cruel World Festival 2025 alongside other artists within the gothic and darkwave scene, including Actors and Provoker. His synth-driven performance fit the festival’s rainy atmosphere, a sound he now brings to his collaboration with The Drums on “It Didn’t Matter.”
